Ink People Center for the Arts celebrate National Poetry Month with a BENEFIT “Intermedia Spoken Word Performance” for The Steelhead Special – Working Class Cultural & Literary Review

Briefly returning to the United States from the United Arab Emirates, poet Nicholas Karavatos will be performing in spontaneous collaboration with bassist Shao Way Wu dialoging with electronica guitarist Jeff Kelley processing his pitched signals layering sound upon sounds all together in conversation with poet Nicholas Karavatos reciting his poems.

American poet NICHOLAS KARAVATOS lives and works near Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Since 2006 he has been an Assistant Professor at the American University of Sharjah where he teaches literature and writing.

His recent book is titled No Asylum (Arcata: Amendment Nine, 2009). Beat legend David Meltzer writes on the back cover: “Nicholas Karavatos is a poet of great range and clarity. This book is an amazing collectanea of smart sharp political poetry in tandem with astute and tender love lyrics. All of it voiced with an impressive singularity.”

No Asylum was designed by Arcata musician and graphic artist Richard LaPreziosa and printed at Bug Press by Robert Arena for Amendment Nine.

JEFF KELLEY is a sharp-witted songwriter and guitarist known from such bands as Dreadful Grapes, The River Rocks, Primordial Stew, Deltron 9, Fred & Wilma, The Miracle Show, The Vanishing Pints and his innumerable solo acoustic appearances. From fireside folkie to electrified freak-out, JEFF KELLEY is an aural delight of eternal energy.

As a songwriter who deconstructs the familiar, JEFF KELLEY delightfully transmits the commonplace into nonlinear expressions of everyday experiences. When listening to JEFF KELLEY for the first time, many people feel they know his songs from somewhere; they seem familiar, comfortable yet intriguing enough to listen to time and again. His songs grow with you, retain their intrinsic value and unfold and develop with the listener.

Tonight, though, JEFF KELLEY will be playing electronica guitar in spontaneous collaboration with NICHOLAS KARAVATOS, plugging into a Pod X3; in the effects loop of the X3 is Boss MT2; into Boss ME50; into DigiTech GNX 1; out of X3 into Akai HeadRush and a Line6 DM both used as phrase samplers each with a volume pedal. These intermedia spoken word performances are the latest phase in an aural collaboration that dates from 1983.

SHAO WAY WU is a bassist – The Bassist – and performs locally with jazz groups Zu Zu's Petals and Inkling. He teaches music part time at his alma mater, Humboldt State University. In addition to working with other local poets such as Jerry Martien, SHAO WAY WU has collaborated with NICHOLAS KARAVATOS on several occasions over the years, most recently at the Arcata Theater Lounge for the December 2009 book launch of No Asylum with ART BROWN, JEFF KELLEY and MARK WESTON.

JOE SHERMIS is the editor and publisher of The Steelhead Special – Working Class Cultural & Literary Review, which has been a fixture on regional newsstands for decades. It is now published under the aegis of The Ink People who, as a celebration of National Poetry Month in the United States, are sponsoring this benefit “intermedia spoken word performance” by international poet Nicholas Karavatos and local musicians Jeff Kelley & Shao Way Wu to support it continued publication.

Nicholas Karavatos lives near Dubai, teaching literature and writing at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. He has been an Assistant Professor there since 2006. From 2001 he had taught general studies at a small private college in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. In December 2009, Amendment Nine (Arcata) published his first book No Asylum. Joan Baranow, PhD is an Assistant Professor of English at Dominican University of California. Her poetry has appeared in The Paris Review, Western Humanities Review, The Antioch Review, The Western Journal of Medicine, and other magazines. Her poetry has also appeared in Women Write Their Bodies: Stories of Illness and Recovery, issued in 2007 by Kent State University Press. Her book of poetry, Living Apart, was published by Plain View Press. She won Individual Artists Fellowships in Poetry from the Marin Arts Council and from the Ohio Arts Council. She is a member of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers. With her husband, physician and poet David Watts, she produced the PBS documentary Healing Words: Poetry & Medicine, airing nationally in 2008-2011.

David Watts, MD has published five books of poetry, one under his avant-guard pseudonym, Harvey Ellis, and produced a CD of “word-jazz.” His book of stories, The Orange Wire Problem, along with Bedside Manners, embodies explorations into the complexities, dangers, ethics and mysteries of healing. He is an NPR commentator on All Things Considered, a producer of the PBS program Healing Words: Poetry and Medicine, a gastroenterologist at UCSF, and a classically trained musician. He has been an on-camera television host for PBS, Lifetime Network and KTVU-TV and a medical columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. He founded two summer writing workshops for poets and writers with an interest in illness and healing, one at Sarah Lawrence College and another at Dominican University of San Rafael.

KIM NORIEGA grew up in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, but in her late 20's bought a brand new Camaro, and -- with her five-year-old (beautiful!) daughter in tow -- drove "as far south and west" as possible without leaving the country -- to San Diego to be exact -- where they danced together on the beach singing Pretenders' songs and made angels of sand instead of snow.

Now that her daughter is grown, Kim spends her time (when not writing) putting her books in order according to the Dewey Decimal Number Classification System (mostly 800s) and thinking of crafts to make for her day job with her family literacy kids using yogurt containers. Kim's favorite flower is the lilac (closely followed by wild violets and black tulips) and her favorite color is red -- which is why she wore a red lace wedding gown when she married her beloved, Ernie.

Kim’s poem "Heaven, 1963," first published in Tebot Bach's Blue Arc West: Anthology of California Poets, was featured by former U.S. Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser, in his nationally syndicated column, American Life in Poetry. The title poem of her first book, Name Me, recently published by Fortunate Daughter Press, was a finalist for the 2009 Joy Harjo prize.

CHRIS COTTRELL was born in Portland, Oregon but grew up on Maui. His fiction, reviews and poetry have appeared in The Scene, Alchemy, Willamette Week, Portland Review (which he now edits), Clackamas Literary Review, Nervy Girl! and Alembic (formerly Mercury). Cottrell has been awarded the 2009 Shelley Reece award and the PSU/Literary Arts Writers in the Schools Residency and Internship for 2009-2010. He is the one of the first poetry MFAs from Portland State.

CAROLYN BRAZDA was the finalist for the 2008 and 2009 Academy of American Poets Award. She lives and writes in Portland, OR.

This night’s intermedia spoken word performance is a spontaneous collaboration among a poet and improvising musicians. We are invited to celebrate Amendment Nine’s publication of No Asylum, a new book of poems by Nicholas Karavatos.

Beat legend David Meltzer (author of David’s Copy: Selected Poems [Penguin 2005,] Beat Thing [La Alameda 2004], and No Eyes: Lester Young [Black Sparrow 2000], among many others) writes on the back cover of No Asylum:

"Nicholas Karavatos is a poet of great range and clarity. This book is an amazing collectanea of smart sharp voiced political poetry in tandem with astute and tender love lyrics. All of it voiced with an impressive singularity."

Fresh-off-the-press copies of No Asylum will be available at the book launch performance.

Accompanying the poet on stage will be Mark Weston (drums), Jeff Kelley (guitar), Art Brown (guitar), and Shao Way Wu (bass):

Nicholas Karavatos currently teaches literature & creative writing at American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. He has also taught in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman and in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A graduate of Humboldt State University, Nicholas Karavatos was a local resident from 1983 to 1996 when he relocated to San Francisco to study Poetics with Tom Clark, Adam Cornford, Gloria Frym, Lyn Hejinian, and David Meltzer at New College of California. (The NCoC Poetics Program was founded by poet Robert Duncan.) While there he was also a Production Coordinator at Small Press Traffic Literary Arts Center, assisting author Dodie Bellamy.

Nicholas Karavatos, sparodically from 1983 to 1996, was a producer of KHSU’s Mad River Anthology, a sound technician at CenterArts, a tutor at the Indian Teacher Education & Personnel Program, a cook at The Sprouted Seed, an artisan at Holly-Yashi, an assembler at Tomas Jewelry, and a local day laborer.

Though he moved overseas in 2000, he still visits us often to perform – and has never stopped writing & publishing poems in such books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and ephemera as After the Fallen, Big Bridge: The War Papers, Blackbox – A Record of the Crash, Certain Stones, Cherry Bleeds, Country Activist, debt, Earth First! Radical Environmental Journal, EcoNews, Edge City Magazine, Hamilton Stone Review, Humboldt-Central American Solidarity Newsletter, Juke Jar, Log, Minotaur, mirage[periodical], Numinous, Paisley Moon, PoetsWest Online, Portland Review, Prophetic Voices, Prosodia, Punk Rock Saved My Life, Red Fez, San Fernando Poetry Journal, Steelhead Special, there., Thieves Jargon, Tight, Travelling Poet, Todd Point Review, Toyon, Unlikely Stories, West Wind Review, What the Hell, and With+Stand.

Nicholas Karavatos performed his poems in spontaneous collaboration with Art Brown, Morgan Stern, Mark Weston, and others at the North Country Fair in 1992 & 1993, and twice on KHSU’s Conscious World in the early 90s; with Krayola at HempFest West in Redwood Park in 1992; with Shao Way Wu on bass at the Jambalaya in 1996; and most recently with Jeff Kelley on electric guitar on KHSU’s Mad River Anthology and at the Accident Gallery in Eureka in early 2009. Over the years he’s given numerous readings throughout California, Oregon, and Washington. Outside the United States in 2007 he performed at “Betwixt & Between III: Globalization, Interculturalization & Translation,” an international conference in the United Arab Emirates sponsored by Queen’s University Belfast and American University of Sharjah.

Jeff Kelley, who originally brought Wax Hands to our community gatherings, is a sharp-witted songwriter & guitarist known from such bands as Dreadful Grapes, The River Rocks, Primordial Stew, Deltron 9, Fred & Wilma, The Miracle Show, and his innumerable solo acoustic appearances. From fireside folkie to electrified freak-out, Jeff Kelley is an aural delight of eternal energy.

Mark Weston has drummed in the North Coast’s most evocative worldbeat and alt-prog bands. A percussion luminary, the rest of the world knows Mark Weston from his good times with Chris Berry and OJ Ekomode.

Art Brown is a maestro of ambient guitar, both electric and electronically processed acoustic. He has recently (finally) graduated from Humboldt State University.

Shao Way Wu is a bassist – The Bassist – and performs locally with jazz groups Zu Zu's Petals and Inkling. He teaches music part time at his alma mater, Humboldt State University.

Richard LaPreziosa designed No Asylum for Amendment Nine & Nicholas Karavatos. An upstate New Yorker graduated from Sacramento State University, Richard LaPreziosa is a singing-songwriting guitar-shaman who has been regionally appearing everywhere all time with such bands as the Jazz Monks, The River Rocks, Deltron 9, The Replacements, The Miracle Show, and Eyes Anonymous. He appears here tonight as the sacred typesetter & graphic designer.

Amendment Nine is a new publishing project out of McKinleyville, California.

We headlined the gallery's monthly event: the Accident Slam. During the evening's readings, an artist makes a painting. The audience votes on the best open-mic poet from the opening set.
